Garstang and District Children's Festival

A great picture from Whitmonday, 1910, and here we see some of Garstang "Suffragettes" being apprehended by a 'Policeman', seen to the right of the picture. Chris Richardson, of The Eagle and Child Hotel, can be seen fourth from the left with a banner demanding "Votes for Women!". The sight of men in drag back then must have caused howls to the womenfolk of Garstang!

The 'new policeman', a scene from the 1910 Parade, was taken in Singletons back garden. Three people appear on this picture, but only Janey Singleton, the ironmonger's daughter, can actually be seen riding her 'horse'! She wore a false moustache and even has a proper truncheon too. Note the peep holes on the horse's neck!
